Matt Schust’s painting is concerned with the tradition of formalism and has its roots in geometric abstraction, colour field painting, minimalism, and neo-geo. Through the use of space, colour and line, his work strives to create a number of optical effects that are further complicated by the emergence of characteristics which allude to forms outside the domain of ‘pure’ abstraction such as diagrammatic plans and commercial design & layout. These external elements are not literal representations of real-world structures; rather, they are used as the armature through which an exploration of space, composition, and colour can occur.
